Laurent Wauquiez was born on 12 April 1975 in Lyon.
A graduate of the École Normale Supérieure and agrégé in history, he entered the Ecole Nationale d’Administration (ENA), and went on as a magistrate in the Conseil d’Etat.
Laurent Wauquiez was elected as MP representing the Haute Loire in 2004 and became the youngest member of the French parliament. He was then elected mayor of Puy-en-Velay.
In 2007, Laurent Wauquiez was named Minister of State, Government Spokesman. He undertook to modernise government communication. Following year, he was appointed Minister of State for Employment, in which capacity he focused on in-depth labour market reform aimed at better supporting job-seekers, reforming the vocational training system and improving employment opportunities for older workers.
On 14 November 2010, the President of the Republic appointed him Minister responsible for European Affairs.
